About

The Story
Cinders is an artist run gallery located on a shady tree-lined street in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. We have been hosting monthly art exhibitions, live music, readings, talks, performances, and BBQs for over 6 years. We also have a store section dedicated to artist-made books and zines, prints, records, and other handmade art objects.

The idea for Cinders began from a desire to create our own model for what an art gallery could be like. Replacing the often cold and intimidating atmosphere of normal galleries, we decided to make a space that was more inviting and accessible to everyone. A space run by artists that was for other artists, art lovers, and the community around us. When we realized that we were not alone and that there was quite a significant community out there who felt the same way, we were inspired to start bringing these like-minded people together under one roof. As we searched for the right location, our house literally burned down in front of us, leaving us tragically homeless but also putting the requisite “fire” under our asses to quickly make it a reality. Thus “Cinders” was born. Born out of a tragedy and the basic DIY tenet of: If you are unhappy with the way others are doing it, you just have to do it yourself.

We opened up the doors by the summer of 2004 and have been running with it ever since, always growing, evolving and challenging ourselves and all the ways art can be shown. If you are in NY, please pay us a visit in real life. And if you are not, we present to you this website-chock full information, photos, art, and all the amazing people who are helping us make this project happen. Thanks for looking.
