I remember being at a Kmart, mid 1980s, probably around 7 years old. I was a huge metalhead by then. KISS was my favorite band but they had dropped their makeup schtick and proved to be ugly dudes with bad style without their demonic cartooney personas to cover that up. Licensed to Ill was in my hands. The crashing airplane that said “Eat me” backwards was enticing. The Fight for your right to party video had infected my brain. I got my first rap cassette that day and played it till it broke. I didn’t know what brass monkey was but it sure was fun to sing along.

The Beastie Boys had opened up a whole world to me and everyone else in suburban white america. Sure they were white but they could rap as good as anybody and they were down with Run DMC so they always seemed cool. Especially when Paul’s Boutique came out and alienated the frat boys finally who didn’t get that the joke was on them. A select group of kids at my school got it and we all went to see them at some gymnasium when they played with Rollins Band and Cypress Hill on their Check Your Head tour.

My interest in their music waned a bit not too long after that but those first 3 albums i could always go back to, nostalgically but also just because it is good music. The Beasties were a game changer and their cultural impact cannot be denied. Adam was an integral part of all of that and so that’s why we are pouring a little bit of our Ballantine Ale out on the ground this afternoon.

We are saddened to hear about the passing of Adam Yauch (aka MCA) of the Beastie Boys, at the young age of 47 today. Adam was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and finally lost his battle. Our hearts go out to Adam’s family and friends. Rest well bro.

Out today digitally is the Ocropolis Japan Benefit from Brah Records called Koozies, Woodies and Beer.

Coming out of an idea hatched during a birthday brunch for Kid Millions (Oneida, Brah Records), the compilation features 19 songs from a group of amazing artists, including many Cinders friends like DUBKNOWDUB, Kynfe Hyts, Oakley Hall, Christy and Emily, Noveller, Red Dawn 2, Akron/Family, and Liturgy. All the bands generously agreed to donate proceeds from the compilation to two Japanese charities (Ashinaga and JOICFP), picked by Shinji Masuko from DMBQ and Boredoms.

NOTES: A Koozie is a foam insulator used to keep your beer (or alternative beverage cold). Required for all beers consumed at the Ocropolis.
A Woodie is the Oneida name for an electric combo organ from the 60s and 70s. It must contain some wood. The Ocropolis probably contains at least 20.

I, kelie bowman, am involved in this amazing project called Boatel. It is in Jamaica Bay at Marina 59 in Far Rockaway. I got an art residency to turn this boat into my own art installation. During the summer months people can book a night on one of the boats. There are 16 boats, thus 16 artists working, all of the projects I am excited about in different ways. I think it is really a special project and one of those projects that help make new york a special place to live. My boat is called Sea Wolf. Here she is before I started working on her. And you can learn more about this project HERE.

This is from Jessie Rose Vala who has been volunteering for Black Mesa Indigenous Support this year.

Greetings BMIS Regional Coordinators and other members of the Support
Network,
We are writing to let you know that next week (April 25th-28th) several
Dine’ elders from the Hopi Partitioned Land area of Big Mountain/Black Mesa
are travelling to Tucson, AZ to testify in front of United Nations
Rapporteur for Indigenous Peoples, Profesor James Anaya. Professor Anaya
will be hosting sessions across the country with Indigenous Peoples, Tribal
Leaders and Indigenous organizations to investigate how the US government
is implementing (or not) the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous
Peoples. If you are not familiar with this comprehensive Declaration, we
encourage you to take a look at it.

This is an incredible opportunity for Big Mountain/Black Mesa elders–who
have been resiliently resisting forced relocation, combating the effects of
environmental racism, and standing on the front lines of the battle against
continued climate chaos–to have their stories heard by a UN
representative. Among other things, they plan to discuss the Little
Colorado River and the SB2109 Water Settlement Act, the HPL Bennett Freeze,
and the damage to the holy San Francisco Peaks.
