We recently played catchup with one of our favorite people,
Jo Dery, to see what she has been up to and what she has planned for 2012. We first met Jo on a rooftop in Brooklyn while she was on tour showing films with live soundtracks and have been enamoured with her animations, books and prints ever since. Jo has been in several exhibitions and had book release parties at Cinders over the years. This time of year always reminds us of when we used to make it up to Providence, RI (where Jo used to live) for some epic New Years Eve parties with her at the Dirt Palace back in the mid-late aughts. Good times for sure and plenty mo good times to be had in 2012….

C: what are you currently working on?
J: I’m just finishing up a project for the DeCordova Museum’s Biennial exhibition, which opens January 21. The work includes an animated projection, 3 circular books, and a set of wooden dice that I made. I had help from some amazing buddies in Providence — bookbinder Deb Dormody and noise-guru Scott Reber (Work/Death).

C: winter plans?
J: I moved to Chicago last July, so I have a list of places I still need to explore and I need to learn how to move about in below 0 degrees! I want to start a hiking club, but that might need to wait till Spring.

C: what are you worried about?
Trying not worry these days… Better to always make choices out of love instead of fear, and give people the chance to be their best.

C: what are you happy about?
J:Dramatic life changes! Cheers for newness in all of its thrilling and terrifying glory!

C: what are you reading?
J: While home for the holidays, I went to the RISD library and checked out “DuChamp: A Biography” — based on reading KingCat’s top 40 recommendation. But I need to return it today! Gonna check it out again in Chicago.

“Rat Stories” Title Sequence from Jo Dery on Vimeo.

Thanks Jo! Stay warm.

Be sure to check out the 2012 deCordova Biennial, which is opening January 21st.

You can purchase one of her latest books from Little Otsu.

And Cinders has a bunch of her beautiful prints for sale.

Also you can see more of Jo’s video HERE and catchup often with her BLOG

Our latest installment of CATCHUP N MUSTARD is with artist Brian Chippendale from Providence, RI. We caught up with Brian right before the Holidays and soon after he finished a 2 person exhibition in Providence with Jungil Hong. Let’s see what he’s up to…

Brian’s studio

C: what are you currently working on?
B: I have been working hard on my Tweeting. I practice everyday lifting letters up and down. It gets heavy. Stretching words and mouthing sentences into the mirror with my eyes closed. My handle is AHAFAN88, i only tweet about my favorite cartoon band Aha, they are the best. I hope I get to see them. Oh, and me and Jungil Hong have an art show in Providence up right now. Or we did depending on when I actually send this email back to Sto. So now it’s time to draw my comic Puke Force again after the post show energy dip wears off. And put plastic over the windows. I should go work on that.

C: winter plans?
B: Stay Warm. Help the cats stay warm. See if Jung is warm. Draw comics. Play drums. record stuff. Not get depressed. Sit in sun when possible. Maybe go someplace new!

C: what are you worried about?
B: The world is in chaos. Americans have really decided you are either on their team or not. Guns might be drawn in the name of Jesus. I worry about the average IQ of the United States.

C: what are you happy about?
B: Making things. A purging of accumulated input pours out sound and form all shapes all sizes. Uh, which right now looks like comics. I’m happy about the days the air is as sweet as candy. I’m really into the sun right now. Which is currently hiding.

C:what are you reading?
B:Too many comics. And “We Meant Well” by Peter Van Buren which details how much U.S money was dumped down the drain in the name of rebuilding Iraq. Dumped down the fucking drain dude!

The High Castle, 48” wide by 58” tall, Mixed media collage, 2011

Check out Brian’s exhibition, In Habitat, with Jungil Hong at Buonaccorsi+Agniel HERE.

See the work we have by Brian in the CINDERS Inventory Dungeon.

Brian will be back in NY on Jan 27th to play music in his solo project BLACK PUS, along with Matter Waves (David First, Kid Millions, Bernard Gann) and the Weasel Walter Trio at SECRET PROJECT ROBOT in Brooklyn. See you there!

Curated/organized by J. Morrison

Printed Matter is pleased to present 24 DAYS OF MATTER PRINTED, a live screenprinting project by J. Morrison. From December 1st until the 24th, daily screenprinting sessions will feature a rotating cast of 20 artists creating collaborative works in the Printed Matter storefront. During these sessions, the artistic collaboration will be accumulative, with a new artist each day adding his or her own print to the previously produced prints. Prints will be available for purchase at any stage during this process.

Working under the theme of a “Self-Portrait,” the artists will print their creation on a variety of media – from Sweatshirts, Underwear, Handkerchiefs, and a special fine art Paper Edition of 100. They will be priced affordably, ranging from $10-$100, with the paper edition increasing as the show progresses with all of the artists’ screenprints collaged together. The works created will be on exhibit at Printed Matter through mid-January.

This year’s exhibition with J. Morrison follows in a long tradition of Printed Matter’s holiday events to support the institution, including past fundraisers organized by the artists’ collective Collaborative Projects (or COLAB), and Giftland, curated by Max Schumann and guest curators. J. Morrison’s show title and theme are a play off the “12 Days of Christmas” and in modern commercial times the “25 Days of Christmas,” giving an artist’s alternative view of holiday consumerism.

Mulherin + Pollard Present

MY SLOW CALLED LIFE

A solo exhibition of sculptures by STO

December 1 -31 2011

Opening Reception Thursday December 8th 6-9pm

In My Slow Called Life, Sto presents a tranquil, one room NY studio apartment scene as the backdrop for a variety of papier mache sculptures. Devoid of any people, we are left to ponder the objects on their own as we walk through the space. Leftover pizza on the table, old food in the fridge, a stack of books, some dirty socks, and a slop sink with paintbrushes as well as toothbrushes are just a few of the mundane objects recreated in chunky, lovable papier mache.

There is a natural sense of whimsy in the limitations of the mache as a medium and it boldly reveals itself with rough textures and gobs of paint applied liberally. There is also a sense of comedy beneath the surface, as if the objects were laughing at their own meaninglessness and at us for needing them. These deadpan takes on quotidian objects question our common understanding of what is real and reveal the many ways that we are entangled with our possessions.

By shining a spotlight on the everyday, these works evoke our own daily lives and slow us down long enough to take stock in what they really consist of.
