Local Flavor
Octavius Neveaux and Blues Control
July 28th – August 1st 2009
with performances by Blues Control, SSPS, and Budy Blues
Since November 2008, Octavius Neveaux has been producing a body of work that uses the musical catalog of the band Blues Control as his sole source of inspiration. Detailed drawings of African tribes people, a man and woman kissing, an ear peeking out of messy hair and an excited monkey are created with india ink, graphite, and enamel wall paint on paper. Mostly large scale works, the imagery is both bold and colorful,at times hypnotic and in some of the smaller works a subtle and quietness.
During that time, he has completed the cover art for their newly released full length LP “Local Flavor.” The purpose of the exhibition is to create an environment where the music and art are in constant dialogue with one another, a cyclical exchange between artists working in completely different mediums.
Blues Control is an instrumental duo (Russ Waterhouse and Lea Cho) from Queens that play intoxicatingly space-y and psych-y retro noise that swirls and squaks towards electronic rock enlightenment. The band relies on a smattering of dark (very dark) keyboard/piano melodies that are filled in with feedback-heavy guitar fuzz, and other electric machine-made sounds.
